Chapter One
On Beth Street a big, light blue house stood on freshly cut grass. Inside, lived the Ridges. Mr. Ridge, Mrs. Ridge, Don Ridge, Ella Ridge, and their seven cats: Jim, Darla, Muffin, Luna, and Cowboy. You would think that their house would be full of cat hairs, and their drapes ripped to shreds. But the cats' orange fur did not shed, and even though each one of them had sharp little claws, they did not wish to use them unless they were outside. If you were ever to go into the dainty house, you would not find one mouse. Even if you searched in the nooks and crannies, you wouldn't even find the tiniest trace. That was because they were good mousers. No mouse traps were needed. They never smelled, and they didn't complain too badly when they had to get trimmed or bathed. Jim and Darla was the parents and the others were their kittens. You could tell which one is which because they each had a mark or they made a special sound that no other kitten made. Jim had white ears, while Darla had a bell on her collar so that she jingled when she tippy toed across the floors. Muffin had a white heart right under her chin. Luna had a moon-shape on her back, and Cowboy always wore a bandanna. Ella would giggle when Cowboy would lick her small hand, and Don liked to run around with a long piece of string in his hand while Muffin would chase him. All of the Ridges loved each cat and they had many stories about them, and that is the reason for this story.
